Failing to stop at the scene and /or failing to report an accident.
Where owing to the presence of a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place an accident has occurred (i.e. where injury is caused to someone other than the driver or damage is caused to something other than the driver¢s vehicle)...
¢The driver of the mechanically propelled vehicle must stop and, if required to do so by any person having reasonable grounds for so requiring, give his name and address and also the name and address of the owner and the identification marks of the vehicle.
If for any reason the driver of the mechanically propelled vehicle does not give his\ name and address under (2) above, he must report the accident¢
Road Traffic Act 1988 s170(2) and (3).
The requirement to report the accident is to a police station or constable as soon as reasonably practicable and in any case within 24hours.
Each offence carries a discretionary disqualification; if disqualification is avoided then 5 -10 penalty points are mandatory (unless there are special reasons). The offence is also imprisonable (maximum 6 months).
If a defendant can satisfy the court that he was genuinely unaware of the accident then he must be found not guilty.
